A Community with Deep Roots
Stambaugh Township was established in 1886, when it separated from Iron River Township. W.T. Carpenter served as the township's first supervisor. Early settlement centered around what is now the former City of Stambaugh, while roads gradually expanded into the surrounding districts, connecting farms, logging operations, and homesteads.
Several of these historic district names, including Baumgartner, Saunders, Pentoga, and South Brule, are still familiar today. Many families continue to live on properties that have been passed down through generations. At one time, the township was also home to more than eight schools, reflecting the many families and small communities that once spread throughout the area.
